The day the screen went blank

I thought (as a non-nerd) I'd experienced just about everything I could deal with when it comes to computers. The blue screen of death, a mouse with a life of its own, and a totally black screen with a "coded" message I most assuredly didn't understand. But obviously I had not "suffered" enough. Yesterday when I booted up, the screen remained blank.
It would seem I'm in the world of hardware problems.
Perhaps this has been building up for a long time. I mean, the computer has been arbitrarily rejecting disks and sounding like a 747 trying to reach cruising altitude for months... New PC arrives next week!
