| Valarie Clark, nee Schauble. That's me. Born after Columbus
discovered America and before the end of World War II - which is as specific
as I'm going to get!
Growing up in the Rock 'n Roll era was an experience appreciated even
more in retrospect. I can personally testify to the fact that being in
high school in the 1950s was all it's been cracked up to be - and more!
Souped-up hot rods, dual exhausts, cow catchers, chopped and channeled
Ford convertibles, necker's knobs, watching the submarine races, study
hall, and sock hops… those were the days.
I saw the advent of television (those little screens augmented with
a huge magnifying glass) and the ballpoint pen. Disposable lighters
and filter-tipped cigarettes. Watched Elvis's TV debut (from the waist up)
and went to the Drive-In on Saturday nights. Life in the '50s was in
black-and-white - and it was fun. But standing on college campuses in
the dark trying to catch a glimpse of the Russian sputnik, we all
began to sense that things would never quite be the same again.
After graduating from college, I fulfilled the expectations imposed on
my generation: marriage, work - as opposed to career - and then children.
After three years in East Africa, four years on the East Coast, and
three children, the next stop was the Netherlands - supposedly for two years.
Now… 30 years later, one divorce wiser and a second marriage richer,
I'm still in the land of tulips and taxes. I have my own translation
agency, which I founded in 1982, and whenever I have a window of time
I play golf, garden, and read as much and as often as I can. These days
I'm a working grandmother with a very busy schedule, but never too busy
for extra bits and pieces.
